LOL (Laughing out loud) ®

starring Sophie Marceau and Christa Theret
It’s a familiar theme—teens and relationships—yet presented à la French.  Mothers bathe with their girls; the high school facilities are to laugh (or cry) out loud; and the boys’ hairdos frighteningly resemble reality!

Lola’s enticement by romance, sex, alcohol and drugs (and disinterest in schoolwork) brings her mother to confront herself… Director Lisa Azuelos successfully conveys the faults and charms of both generations.

Like most teens, Lola’s life centers around experiential adventures with her friends—both guys and girls. My teen boys related to this movie as easily as I did.

Narrated by the voice of Andy Griffith as Melchior, one of the three wise men, The Very First Noel tells the wonderful story of the first Christmas and the birth of the Savior. The colorful, CG animated tale is told in rhyme, as the wise men make their journey from the East and follow the star to Bethlehem. 26 of charm. One Mom shared, "Our 8 year old watched it all year round!" His preferred character was fear-defying Balthazar. Find out yours.

Tanguy

starring Sabine Azéma, Eric Berger, and André Dussollier
When Tanguy is born, his enamored parents vow he'll be always wanted by their side. 28 years later, he's still living at home...and the parents' don't feel at home in their own place! Unrealistic (yet not totally) and hilariously funny (especially when it's about someone else). One hilarious way to generate intriguing discussions on growing up, house rules, and the responsibilities of parents and children.

Prince Caspian

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian directed by Andrew Adamson by Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media
It's been 1,300 years in Narnia, and the human Telmarines have invaded and driven the native Narnians underground.  Aslan hasn't been seen in centuries.  When the usurping king Miraz has a son, young Prince Caspian (the rightful heir to the Narnian throne) flees for his life.  He regroups the remaining old Narnians, summons the ancient Kings and Queens of Narnia (the Pevensie children) and together they confront the Telmarines.

"Prince Caspian" is definitely a darker story than its predecessor -- the castles are grimy, some of the good guys die and some others turn bad for real, and there's lots of fighting. Even our heroes have to deal with their doubts and anger.  Even so, Narnia remains magical.

P.S.  Not a bedtime movie for very young children.

It's a Wonderful Life

insert image in small size linked to itself by Frank Capra starring James Stewart and Donna Reed
A most beloved movies. George Bailey, a small town entrepreneur, dreams of adventure and travel but circumstances keep him enslaved to his home turf. Meanwhile, George's buddies and family leave Bedford Falls to find fame and fortune. Frustrated by his life, and haunted by an impending scandal, George prepares to commit suicide on Christmas Eve. Clarence, his guardian angel, arrives and shows him what the world would have been like if George had never been born.

Life is frustrating and few of us reach our dreamed fame and fortune. That's why It's a Wonderful Life is such an endearing family movie. A great way to broach, as a family, the value of friendship, work, and appreciation for what we do have.
